Nam Giao Esplanade in Hue

By
Right after being crowned (1802), Emperor Gia Long built the esplanade in An Ninh village in 1803. A few years later, the Court left that position and had new terraces built in Dương Xuân village in the south of Huế Citadel (the remains have been preserved).

Nam Giao Esplanade in Hue/

The Esplanade construction commenced on 25th March, 1806. In early 1807, Gia Long’s Court organized its first worship of Heaven ceremonies (Tế Giao ceremony) there.

Nam Giao Esplanade is an open-air monument. The model of architecture bears both the religious and political significance of Oriental feudalism. Nam Giao Esplanade is connected with the Confucian dogma of heaven. Nam Giao Esplanade also shows the concepts derived from ancient thoughts on the universe: circular heaven and square earth.

Nam Giao Esplanade faces south. Its surrounding stone wall has four big open doors acing the four directions. In front of each door is a very big screen (12.5 meters wide, 3.2 meters high and 0.8meters thick). During Tết holidays, big flags with various colors hung on all these doors: black flag on the north door, blue on the east, red on the south and white on the west.

Nam Giao Esplanade has three terraces of diminishing size in its structure, sumbolizing the oriental theory of three agents: Heaven, Earth and Man. Each terrace had its own color and significance: circular heaven, square earth, blue heaven, yellow earth. The topmost called Viên Đàn is circular, symbolizing Heaven. The surrounding parapet is painted blue. On the day of the ceremony, people built on this layer a conical tent with blue cloth called Thanh Ốc. The next below is a square terrace called Phương Đàn, representing the Earth. The surrounding parapet is painted yellow. For the ceremony, a square house with yellow cloth roof smaller than the one above called Hoàng Ốc was built. The lowest layer is square. The surrounding parapet is painted red, symbolizing Man. At this year, 128 students and dancers performed during the ceremony. The three layers are 4.65 meters high in total. The architecture of Nam Giao Esplanade followed the principles of Yin and Yang and the five basic elements (Metal, Wood, Water, Fire and Earth).

Nam Giao Esplanade in Hue

From Gia Long’s time (1802-1819), the ceremony was annually organized in the first weeks of the second month in the lunar calendar (March of the solar year). From 1880, Emperor Thành Thái realized that each ceremony was too costly so he decided to organize it once every three years. It took the Protocol and Administration Ministries months to prepare for the ceremony. For each ceremony, the emperor came to the Fasting Palace (Trai Cung) to stay there for three days prior to the ceremony. In Bảo Đại’s time, the duration was reduced to one day. The emperor came from the citadel (Đại Nội) to Trai Cung accompanyied by a procession including from 1,000 to 5,000 people. The king sat on the sedan-chair (Ngự Liễn) carried by royal soldiers in the middle path. The main ceremony began officially at 2a.m. and lasted nearly 3 hours.

All the sacrificial offering terraces of the Lý, Trần and Lê Dynasties (from the 11th to 18th centuries) no longer exist. Nam Giao Esplanade of the Nguyễn Dynasty is the only one left relatively undamaged. Visiting it, tourists can have an opportunity to understand more about many aspects of the cultural and spiritual life of Vietnamese feudalism.

Trang An - a spectacular landscape in Ninh Binh

By
Trang An - a spectacular landscaape in Ninh Binh
Vietnam has applied to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for recognition of the Trang An ecological complex in Ninh Binh Province as a world heritage site, Ninh Binh Province Department of Planning and Investment Director Nguyen Chi Tinh told the Vietnam Economic News on January 20.

The 10,000-plus hectare Trang An complex consists of the former capital at Hoa Lu, Tam Coc and Bich Dong natural beauty site and Trang An ecological tourist attraction. The 4,000ha Trang An ecological tourist attraction is the entire Trang An limestone area that is surrounded by 8,000ha, mostly consisting of rice fields. The site dates back some 250 million years and has hundreds of valleys and caves.

Trang An has great aesthetic and geological values, so on September 27, 2011, the Government agreed for application to be made to UNESCO to recognize Trang An as a world heritage site. On July 24-25, 2012, Ninh Binh Province, in coordination with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO and the National Cultural Heritage Council, sponsored a seminar on defining the globally significant values of the Trang An complex for the submission dossier.

Trang An - a spectacular landscaape in Ninh Binh1
After two days of discussion, domestic and foreign seminar participants agreed that the application should feature the site's archaeological, aesthetic and geological values. Professor Paul Dingwall from UNESCO's World Conservation Society said that successful human evolution depends on human adaptability to changes in the environment, and that Trang An provided strong evidence of this adaptability. The Trang An profile has a high possibility of success if it is systematically prepared.

Vietnam Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources Director Tran Tan Van said that the Trang An site had been largely untouched, especially since Ninh Binh selected areas for conservation and development, including strictly protected areas, areas of historical, architectural, artistic and archaeological merit, highly protected areas and sites designed for tourism development, and villages and communes where people are living. Van said he believed that with its great cultural, aesthetic and geological values, Trang An would become a world heritage site in the near future.

Ninh Binh Province leaders said that the Trang An application profile had been well-perceived and well-prepared.

According to the schedule, the UNESCO will return the profile to Ninh Binh in early 2013 to seek clarification on some points, and then the amended profile will be resubmitted; Trang An is expected to be considered for world heritage site recognition by UNESCO in early 2014.

1. Ha Long Bay

Top ten best destinations to visit in Vietnam9
With its aqua-green water and cluster of limestone rocky outcrops rising from the water like sea dragons, Ha Long Bay resembles a scene from a fantasy story. Located about 130 km east of Hanoi in northern Vietnam, this otherworldly bay features more than 2,000 jungle-covered islands pitted with intriguing caves, grottoes, sinkholes and lakes. Ranging between 50 and 90 metres high, many of the islands and outcrops have been sculpted over the centuries by natural processes into fantastic formations. The names of these islands reflect the unusual shapes they resemble such as Voi (elephant) islet, Mai nha (roof) islet and Ga choi (fighting cock) islet.

Although most of the islands are uninhabited, some of the larger islands such as Cat Ba offer restaurants, bars, hotels and tourist attractions like beaches, historic sites, a national park, markets and souvenir shops. Other islands like Dau Be and Bo Hon feature lakes, coral and grottoes that are ideal for swimming, kayaking, diving and cave-exploring. Rock climbing, jungle trekking and wildlife viewing are also available activities.

Boat cruises are the best way to experience the natural wonder of Ha Long Bay. With hundreds of boats ranging from traditional Chinese junks to luxury cruisers, boat tours can vary from day trips to multiple-night journeys. These tours often provide meals, nightlife activities and excursion stops where islands, caves and lagoons can be explored. Most boat cruises are arranged either from Hanoi or from ports such as Hai Phong, Halong City and Cai Rong.-VNA

Bac Ha Market, Sapa Vietnam

By
Being a minority ethnic people market, the town of Bac Ha is famous for its Sunday market which is a trading centre and meeting place for couples, friends, and relatives every Sunday.

Every Sunday, Bac Ha hosts the biggest fair near the mountainous highlands and the Chinese border. It is the largest and most colourful market in the area and attracts throngs of villagers from the surrounding hill tribes. Some walk several hours for the weekly opportunity to trade and barter food, animals, clothes and household goods. 80km from Sapa, Bac Ha Market is not only the place for buying and selling, but also a place for cultural and sentiment exchanging. On the market days, right from the early morning, all paths and mountain roads are full of people and horses pouring to the market. People usually sit in groups around a soup pan ("thang co") eating and chatting.

Many different ethnic groups such as Flower H'mong, Phu La, Black Dao, Tay and Nung minorities gather to buy and sell local products that cannot be found elsewhere. The market was very crowded, local products for sale or barter are carried on horseback. Besides the usual items like pigs, cows, chickens, and ducks, Bac Ha Market sold dogs. As dogs were available as cuts of meat, they were also available live, right next to the live pigs, chickens, and other livestock. There was a brisk trade at the market for everything from hand-embroidered skirts to all manner of 4-legged animals. The “fresh” meat section is not for the faint of heart and might steer more than a few visitors in the direction of strict vegetarianism.

Though tourists were not in short supply, they were not the focus. Most locals paid little attention to them, rather choosing to focus on their business and the short Sunday-sized window of opportunity. Rounding the corner and pungent fumes of alcohol accosted your senses of smell, from corn whiskey, a Bac Ha specialty. The potent moonshine is decanted by vendors from large white plastic jugs to used bottled water containers. If you doubt the ability of a vendor's hooch to peel paint or light your senses on fire, you can try a shot for free.

At the fair, adventurous gastronomes can try “thang co” blood porridge, a popular dish of the H’Mong and other local people. The Flower H’mong minority is the most common here, and their colourful dresses makes is a beautiful sight.

In conclusion, I would like to mention here the comment by Mr. Ikuyo, a tourist from Tokyo (Japan): “The trip to Bac Ha Market was amazing! On the way, the scenery was beautiful and the local people were so friendly. I will come back again!”. Let’s once visit Bac Ha Market and you will be able to experience a wide range of different colorful ethnic minorities and more interesting things of life in the mountains...

Nhi Thanh Grotto

By
Visitors from far always regard Lang Son as home to some grotesque grottoes, of which Nhi Thanh is one of the most beautiful grottoes...

Lang Son has for long had national repute as a year round entertainment centre. Attractions such as Dong Dang Town, Ky Lua Market, Vong Phu Mountain, Tam Thanh Grotto, Nhi Thanh Grotto are said to be very attractive to visitors who are seeking scenic beauty...

Situated in Nhi Thanh Street, approximately 1km from the Lang Son City, Nhi Thanh Grotto houses the Pagoda of Triple Regions (Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism). The grotto was closely related to the celebrity Ngo Thi Si when he was the chief of province between 1777 and 1780. He gave, in a short span of time, a new look to Lang Son in term of politics, economy and national defense. Especially in the domain of culture, he had the merit to discover 8 beautiful landscapes of Lang country including Nhi Thanh Grotto. He hired workers to start the renovation of this grotto in 1779. The right side area, being on a relatively more elevated land and the configuration of terrain better, was chosen to be the place for the building of the Pagoda of Triple Regions (in honour of Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism).

Being a natural cave, Nhi Thanh Grotto lies beneath the Pagoda of Triple Regions, with the depth of 600 meters. On the cliffs at the entrance are 20 inscriptions that are precious historical and literary documents, including autographs of famous scholars. The statue of scholar Ngo Thi Sy on the cliff engraved in 1779 is a precious work of art. The length of a corridor from front entrance to back entrance is over 500 metres with many beautiful and picturesque landscapes. Inscriptions can be seen today on grotto, which were engraved by famous personalities and poets over different epochs.

Moreover, the grotto has numerous stalactites and stalagmites in different shapes, making the grotto look more grotesque and mystical. The entrance to the grotto is almost obscured from sunlight, because it is covered with a dense foliage of trees. High on the wall to the right side of the entrance, there remains a poem carved deep into the stone. The poem was written by Ngo Thi Si (1726- 1780) when he was stationed in Lang Son as the commander of the Lang Son military post. Ngo Thi Si praised the beauty of the magnificent mountain and landscapes possessed by Lang Son. Ngo Thi Si was the person who discovered Nhi Thanh Grotto. The name Nhi Thanh was chosen by Ngo Thi Si to commemorate his birth place in Ta Thanh Oai village in Thanh Oai district, Hanoi. To commemorate his great contributions to the grotto, Ngo Thi Si had his portrait carved on an interior wall.

"Flows of clean pure white stream water run over hundreds of pieces of marble as if it is talking. Turn one's back to the stream and look up to a high mountain peak in the from can see the Vong Phu peak". Ngo Thi Si’s verses make you feel like to visit Lang Son’s beauty spots, and Nhi Thanh Grotto is one of the eight sites that attract a large number of visitors to Lang Son...
